About

Ajmer, a historical trade city that straddles the modern NH8, is known for two landmarks - the Dargah sharif, and Pushkar with its Brahma temple.

Route

NH8 is the main route for most travellers. Approaches:

  • Delhi - Jaipur - Kishangarh - Ajmer. Take the NH8 from Delhi, then the Jaipur bypass, about 42km before Jaipur.
  • Mumbai - Surat - Ahmedabad - Udaipur - Ajmer. Again the NH8. Cagers please be sure to take the Baroda-Ahd expressway, which runs parallel to the NH8

Trains are available directly from Mumbai/Delhi for Ajmer and the nearest airport is Jaipur.

Places of Interest

The dargah sharif is the central attraction. Urs (respect) is held in the memory of the Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. Urs is a festival that breaks boundaries of religion and caste. The festival is held on 25 th Janamdi-ul-Akhir in the month of May and take places for six days.

Other places to visit are the Nasiyan Jain temple and Taragarh fort, which are a stone's throw away, as well as the Anna Sagar lake.

In late October/ early November it is the gateway to Pushkar, which has the temple of Lord Brahma and hosts the annual camel fair when the sandy foothills are teeming with cattle and humans.
