About

Pushkar, a nondescript desert town 22km off the modern NH8, is known for two points of note - the Brahma temple and the Pushkar Camel Fair

Route

NH8 is the main route for most travellers. Approaches:

  • Delhi - Jaipur - Kishangarh - Ajmer. Take the NH8 from Delhi, then the Jaipur bypass, about 42km before Jaipur.
  • Mumbai - Surat - Ahmedabad - Udaipur - Ajmer. Again the NH8. Cagers please be sure to take the Baroda-Ahd expressway, which runs parallel to the NH8

Trains are available directly from Mumbai/Delhi for Ajmer and the nearest airport is Jaipur.

Places of Interest

In late October/ early November the annual camel fair is held when the sandy foothills are teeming with cattle and humans.

What is recommended:

  • Camping in the desert. It is simply oodles of fun. Ahead of the main mela site, you have wasteland where one can go and camp. The only nuisance can be these singer type locals who will come, sing on their own, and not budge before getting 25-30 bucks as bakshish.
  • Check out the Saraswati and Brahma temples. While the brahma temple is nice, the fun is in the saraswati temple, where one ascends some 400m above pushkar to gain a superb view of pushkar. At night, this can be mesmerizing.
  • Pink Floyd cafe/Hotel. Extremely VFM and great atmosphere. It is close to the main market area, and is accessible by a side road just at the start of the pushkar market area. Great service and the messages on the doors, and even in the loo, are simply FUN!
  • You must have Rabri malpuas, for about 5-6 bucks apiece are simply sinful and not to be missed.
  • For the ladies, there's trinkets/silver ornaments which can be bought from the bazaar.
  • Night time fair on the last few days. Its simply an explosion of colors, and in 2006, had a stupendous VFM circus as well.
  • To see lots and lots of animals the better time to visit is the early days, as by the last days, only the diseased and sick animals are left.
